Antique Hand Painted Nippon porcelain footed bowl, c. 1891–1921, beautifully decorated with plums, cherries, flowers and foliage with gold accents.

Dating to the Nippon export era, circa 1891–1921, the bowl features an unusually rich and atmospheric hand-painted still life of blue-purple plums, brilliant red cherries, delicate blossoms and beautifully shaded foliage.

What makes this piece especially striking is its dramatic palette. Deep chocolate brown and smoky tones surround the fruit and foliage, gradually transitioning into warm amber, caramel and soft blush. Against this moody background, the colorful fruit and flowers almost seem to glow.

The softly shaped, gently scalloped bowl is finished with a delicate gold-trimmed rim and rests upon three rounded porcelain feet accented in gold. The exterior continues the warm shaded decoration, transitioning from creamy porcelain into rich brown and golden tones.

The underside bears the green wreath “Hand Painted Nippon” backstamp, identifying it as Japanese porcelain made for the export market during the celebrated Nippon period.

A beautiful example of early 20th-century Japanese decorative porcelain and a wonderful piece for collectors of Nippon, Japanese porcelain, hand-painted china or antique fruit still-life decoration.
