Antique Lavender Manganese Glass Pedestal Compote | Victorian–Edwardian c. 1890–

A beautiful piece of antique glass with a subtle secret—the loveliest whisper of lavender.

This elegant pedestal compote is crafted from clear glass with a delicate lavender-amethyst cast, characteristic of antique glass containing manganese. Manganese was historically used in glassmaking as a decolorizing agent, helping counteract the natural greenish tint caused by iron impurities in the glass. With age and exposure to ultraviolet light, manganese-containing glass can develop the soft lavender or amethyst coloration so prized by collectors today.

Dating approximately to the late Victorian through Edwardian/early 20th-century period, circa 1890–1920, this compote has a wonderfully graceful form. A simple, generously proportioned round bowl rests upon a beautifully molded pedestal with elongated vertical fluting, finished with a broad domed circular foot.

The restrained design is part of its charm. Rather than elaborate pressed decoration, the beautiful proportions, substantial glass and architectural pedestal take center stage. In natural light, the faint lavender coloration becomes especially lovely.
